Monovision LASIK

Is Monovision LASIK for Me?

Monovision is an alternative form of vision correction intended for people that have difficulty seeing both near and far. Monovision corrects the dominant eye for distance and under-corrects the non-dominant eye for near vision. This results in patients no longer needing glasses or contacts for distance or reading! Many of our patients are not aware that an option like this is available and it’s incredibly rewarding to see our patients say “bye, bye” to corrective lenses after undergoing this minimally invasive treatment. The Laser Eye Institute has state-of-the-art procedures and techniques available to address your unique vision needs throughout your lifetime, and monovision is no exception. Typically, around the age of 40, it becomes harder and harder to read small print or see in dim-lit settings. This condition is known as Presbyopia. Some signs of presbyopia to look out for include:

  • Your mobile device/text font size is set to a very large font
  • You need to “straight-arm” the restaurant menu to read it
  • You suffer from frequent headaches and eyestrain

With LASIK or SMILE, your eyes are corrected for distance, so people that rely on bifocals/reading glasses would still need them with standard Laser Vision Correction – well, that is until monovision. Dr. Dan Haddad of the Laser Eye Institute has mastered the art of monovision, which involves your dominant eye being corrected for distance viewing, and the non-dominant eye is corrected for near viewing.

Many patients wonder how correcting each eye a little differently will result in better vision. Well, the brain is a fascinating and intelligent machine that can merge (2) images together, giving you perfect vision both near and far! How cool is that?

Who is eligible for monovision?

Great question! If you:

  • are over the age of 40 and wear bifocals or reading glasses (nearsightedness), you are probably a candidate for monovision
  • have good distance vision, but struggle with near vision, monovision in your less dominant eye (usually only one eye treated) could be a good solution for you
  • already wear monovision contact lenses

Can you date monovision before you “marry” it?

The best part about monovision is that you can simulate what your vision would be like before committing to it. If you want to go on a “date” with monovision, Dr. Dan Haddad will prescribe you a special contact lens that you will wear for (2) weeks to ensure you have ideal vision correction before proceeding with the actual treatment. Our patients love being able to take their new vision for a test drive!

Why doesn’t everyone get monovision?

It’s important to remember that not everyone is a perfect candidate for monovision, but thankfully our team uses advanced methods for determining ideal candidacy. During your complimentary consultation, we will discuss all of your available options for laser vision correction as you and Dr. Haddad come up with the perfect plan together. Whether you decide on monovision, traditional LASIK, or SMILE, we are here to make your goals a reality.
